iPhone Battery Replacement: Apple vs Third Party
Short answer: The iPhone battery replacement Apple vs third party choice comes down to the part and who stands behind it. Apple and Apple Authorized Service Providers install genuine batteries for a set price ($69 to $129 for most models) with a 90-day guarantee, while third-party shops can be cheaper or faster but their parts and warranties vary. If your iPhone has AppleCare+ and the battery is under 80%, go to Apple, because it’s free.
Most guides stop at “Apple costs more, local is cheaper.” That skips the part that actually changes your phone: there are four kinds of places that swap iPhone batteries, and your iPhone can tell which one did the work.
The four places that replace iPhone batteries
1. Apple (Apple Store or mail-in). Genuine battery, Apple’s posted price, and Apple’s guarantee on the work.
2. Apple Authorized Service Providers. Third-party businesses, but Apple trains their technicians, they only use genuine Apple parts and tools, and Apple backs the repair (Apple). One catch: they can set their own fees, so the price may not match Apple’s (Apple).
3. Independent Repair Providers. Local shops that joined Apple’s program for out-of-warranty work. They get genuine Apple parts, tools, training and diagnostics, but they give their own warranty, not Apple’s (Apple).
4. Shops outside Apple’s programs. Most mall kiosks and neighborhood repair shops. Some do great work. The battery could be a quality aftermarket cell, a pulled used part, or something worse, and you only know what you’re getting if you ask.
You can check whether a shop is in group 2 or 3 with Apple’s repair provider lookup. If the shop isn’t listed, treat it as group 4.
What Apple charges right now
These are Apple’s US out-of-warranty battery prices before tax, from Apple’s estimate tool (Apple Support, checked November 4, 2026):
- $69: iPhone 8 and earlier, iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation)
- $89: iPhone XR, XS and XS Max through iPhone 13
- $99: iPhone 14 and 15 (all versions), iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16e, 17 and 17e
- $119: iPhone 16 Pro, 17 Pro (and Pro Max) and iPhone Air
- $129: iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max
- $229: iPhone Duo
Apple inspects the phone before confirming the final fee, and it may add shipping if you mail it in. With AppleCare+, the battery is replaced at no extra charge once capacity drops below 80% (Apple).

What your iPhone shows after the swap
This is the part most comparison articles skip. On iPhone XR, XS and later, go to Settings > General > About. After a battery replacement you’ll see one of these next to Battery (Apple):
- Genuine: a genuine Apple battery, installed with Apple’s process.
- Finish Repair: a genuine battery that still needs to be calibrated.
- Used: a genuine battery that came out of another iPhone (iPhone 15 and later on iOS 18).
- Unknown: not genuine, not working as expected, not linked after the repair, or modified.
An Unknown battery still powers the phone. But Apple says Battery Health info may not be accurate on an unverified battery, and an Unknown part can lower your trade-in value (Apple). If you plan to sell or trade in the phone within a year or two, that’s worth more than the few dollars you might save.
“Finish Repair” is normal after a genuine part goes in. You fix it yourself: update iOS, connect to Wi-Fi, make sure the battery is above 20%, then tap Parts & Service History > Restart & Finish Repair. Repair Assistant handles battery calibration on iPhone 12 and later and iPhone SE (3rd generation) (Apple). Apple also says you need to finish any pending repair before taking the phone to Apple, or you might pay an out-of-warranty fee or be turned away for that part (Apple).
One thing to ask about used batteries
Some shops offer a cheaper “genuine pull,” a real Apple battery taken from another phone. Apple specifically warns against reusing batteries that were installed with adhesive, because the cell can get damaged when it’s pried out, which can lead to swelling or overheating (Apple). Batteries held in with screws can be reused. If a shop offers a used battery, ask how it was removed. Most people are better off with a new one.
How to pick, in order
- Check your coverage. If AppleCare+ is active and Battery Health shows under 80%, book Apple or an Authorized Provider. It’s free.
- Check Battery Health. Settings > Battery > Battery Health. If you’re well above 80% and the phone runs fine, you may not need a battery yet.
- Look up Apple’s price for your model in the list above. That’s your baseline.
- Call one local shop and ask three things: Is it a new genuine Apple battery, a used one, or aftermarket? What’s the warranty and does it cover labor? How long will it take?
- Verify the shop with Apple’s lookup if they say they’re authorized or independent.
- Compare the full deal, not just the price. A few dollars less for an Unknown battery and a short warranty usually isn’t a win on a newer iPhone. On an older phone you plan to run into the ground, it can be.
Before you hand it over
- Back up to iCloud or your computer. Apple says your phone might come back erased (Apple).
- Turn off Apple Cash and remove cards from Wallet.
- On iOS 27 or later, turn on Ready for Repair or Trade-In in the Find My app. On iOS 26 or earlier, turn off Find My (Apple).
- Never give anyone your Apple Account password. Apple says neither it nor its Authorized Providers will ask for it.

FAQ
Is it cheaper to replace an iPhone battery at a third-party shop?
Often, but not always. Apple charges $69 to $129 for most models out of warranty. Independent shops set their own prices, so get a written quote that names the battery type before you compare.
Will a third-party battery void my iPhone warranty?
Apple’s warranty and AppleCare+ don’t cover third-party parts or repairs done with them. If your iPhone is still covered, using a non-Apple battery can cost you that coverage for related problems.
Why does my iPhone say Unknown Part after a battery replacement?
Apple shows Unknown when the battery isn’t genuine, isn’t working as expected, or wasn’t linked to your iPhone after the repair. It doesn’t stop the phone from working, but Battery Health readings may not be accurate.
Can an independent shop install a genuine Apple battery?
Yes. Shops in Apple’s Independent Repair Provider program can get genuine Apple parts, tools and training. Apple doesn’t back their repairs, so the warranty comes from the shop.
Is the battery free with AppleCare+?
Yes, if the battery’s maximum capacity has dropped below 80%. Apple replaces it at no extra charge. Check Settings > Battery > Battery Health first so you know where you stand.
