A worn-out battery is the most common reason an iPhone dies early, shuts off at 30%, or feels slow. Replacing it costs much less than a new phone, and many local shops can do it while you wait. This directory lists more than 4,000 iPhone repair shops across the US, so you can compare Apple with independent shops near you.
To check your battery, go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health (on some newer models it’s Battery Health & Charging). If Maximum Capacity is below 80%, or your iPhone shows a “Service” message, it’s a good time to replace the battery.

Apple vs. a local shop
| Apple / Authorized Provider | Independent local shop | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Set prices (see below) | Often less than Apple; ask for a quote |
| Parts | Genuine Apple battery | Varies: ask if it’s genuine or aftermarket |
| Speed | Often same day with an appointment, or by mail | Many do walk-ins and same-day swaps |
| Warranty | 90 days, or the rest of your Apple warranty | Varies by shop; ask before you book |
| AppleCare+ | No charge if capacity is below 80% | Not covered by AppleCare+ |
Apple’s US out-of-warranty battery prices (before tax): $129 for iPhone 18 Pro / Pro Max · $119 for iPhone 16 Pro, 17 Pro (and Pro Max) and iPhone Air · $99 for iPhone 14, 15 and 16 (all versions), iPhone 16e, 17 and 17e · $89 for iPhone X/XR/XS through iPhone 13 · $69 for iPhone 8 / 8 Plus and earlier. Free with AppleCare+ when capacity is below 80%. Apple inspects the phone before confirming the price, and Authorized Service Providers can set their own fees. Source: Apple Support
How to choose a shop
- Ask whether the battery is genuine Apple or aftermarket, and what the price is for your exact model.
- Ask how long the warranty on the battery and the work lasts.
- Check how long it takes. Many shops can swap a battery while you wait.
- Look at recent Google reviews that mention battery jobs.
- Back up your iPhone to iCloud or a computer first.
- After the swap, a non-Apple battery may show an “Unknown Part” message in Settings. That’s normal, but you should know about it before you choose.
- Ask if they’ll recycle your old battery safely.
iPhone battery replacement FAQs
How much does iPhone battery replacement cost?
At Apple, out-of-warranty battery service in the US is $69 to $129 before tax, depending on your model, and it's free with AppleCare+ if your battery is below 80% capacity. Independent repair shops set their own prices, which are often lower, so ask for a quote for your exact model.
Is iPhone battery repair the same as battery replacement?
Yes. A worn battery can't be repaired, so "battery repair" means swapping in a new battery. The rest of the phone stays the same.
How long does an iPhone battery replacement take?
Many local shops do it while you wait, often the same day. At Apple, timing depends on appointments and parts, and mail-in service takes longer.
When should I replace my iPhone battery?
When Maximum Capacity in Settings drops below 80%, your phone shows a "Service" message, or it shuts down without warning or drains very fast.
Will a local shop void my warranty?
Damage caused by an independent repair isn't covered by Apple. If your iPhone is still under warranty or has AppleCare+, check with Apple first, since battery service may be free.
