What is the battery part number for the original iPhone 3GS MB717LL from July 2009?

brvalentine Asked: What is the battery part number for the original iPhone 3GS MB717LL from July 2009?

I want to replace the battery in my iPhone 3GS 32GB purchased in July 2009 (just after this model was released). The case model number is A1303 and the model number on the "About" screen is MB717LL. Looking on eBay and Amazon, there are a number of different battery part numbers listed, though I understand from reading reviews and talking to people that have tried replacing the battery that some battery models won't work.

The part numbers I've found on line include Apple Part Number (APN) 616-0428, -0431, -0433, -0434, -0435.

My phone is running iOS 5.0.1, which seems relevant as the compatibility issues seem to show up with later versions of the OS. Is there any way to tell which battery I can use without opening up the phone? I've read dozens of posts and reviews on various sites on this topic, but I can't find a definitive guide to determining which battery I need, and many of the vendors aren't explicit about which battery part number they ship.

Thanks!

Read the instruction manual that came with your iPhone. Battery type should be in the first couple of pages or look in the index under "battery".

Using batteries not intended for your phone is dangerous and harmful.
